Trials – initial results
This document provides preliminary results on trials performed in the CATALYST pilots:
▪ Green Pont Saint Martin DC
▪ Poznan Supercomputing Centre DC
▪ Schuberg Philis DC
▪ Distributed Qarnot DC
Trials have been performed in compliance with test cases defined in the report D7.3 Trial set-up, test & evaluation methodology. The tests setup is described, and relevant information is provided. In particular, five test cases have been executed in the pilots, four test cases have been simulated and two desk studies have been performed. Simulations have been performed to investigate about the potentiality of the data centers by supposing that they are equipped with proper devices (e.g. thermal storage, hear pumps, connection to district heating network, etc.). Whenever possible, all the simulations have used real measurements coming from the four Data Centers. Preliminary results are used for the computation of KPIs supporting the evaluation of results from DC trials.
This document provides also information about the physical environment, where the CATALYST solution is intended to run. So, proper UML deployment diagrams  are introduced for each pilot. This kind of diagram shows, in a graphical way, the physical nodes where the CATALYST components will be installed and configured. The deployment of CATALYST software in pilots is an ongoing activity. UML deployment diagrams available in this report will be further updated and detailed in D7.5 Trial Assessment and Replication guidelines report (expected at month 36) reflecting the final HD and SW configuration adopted by each pilot.
Regarding the Green Pont Saint Martin (PSM) DC, initial trial results are related to the CATALYST Sc.1: Single DC Providing Electrical Energy Flexibility. Test cases have been executed in real time with the aim to evaluate the electrical energy flexibility offered by the PSM DC through the dynamic usage of the cooling system. The latter is specified in this document for a better understanding of the performed trial (test case PSM_DC_TC_1). The trial is improved by a thermodynamic model of the Data Centre, which was developed in order to simulate the PSM DC behaviour. The PSM pilot has been also considered for the CATALYST Sc.2: Single DC Providing Thermal Energy Flexibility and relevant results are reported in this report on respect of the performed simulation supported by real measurements. PSM pilot is planning to cover Sc.4 Single DC Providing both Thermal and Electrical Energy Flexibility to simulate beside the potential thermal energy flexibility also the electrical energy flexibility in PSM. This means that PSM pilot will cover this scenario through the simulation supported by real measurements and relevant results will be provided in D7.5.
Regarding the Poznan Supercomputing Centre (PSNC) DC, this document provides preliminary results of trials related to CATALYST Sc.1. The test case focuses on the electrical energy flexibility of the DC by power capping, using on-site photovoltaic renewable system, and adaptation of a cooling system. The trial is executed using the real infrastructure consisting of the micro Data Center (micro DC) that is connected to Renewable Energy Sources. The PSNC pilot addresses the CATALYST Sc.2, presented in this report together with the analysis and estimations of heat exchange possibilities between PSNC and Poznan University of Technology (PUT) campus. Moreover, in collaboration with Distributed Qarnot DC, this pilot is also addressing the CATALYST Sc.3 Workload Federated Data Centres and relevant results will be provided in D7.5. Apart from Sc. 1, 2 and 3, PSNC is planning to cover Sc.5 Workload Federated DCs Providing Electrical Energy Flexibility. D7.5 will collect results on the trial which will be performed by integrating a capability of IT load migration used for validation of Sc.3 with electrical flexibility means evaluated in Sc.1. This will be executed using the real micro DC infrastructure connected to Renewable Energy Sources.
Test cases described in D7.3 for Shuberg Philis (SBP) DC pilot have the twofold goal of validating the CATALYST solution as well as the DC capability. The latter is a precondition of adopting the CATALYST solution. This pilot addresses the CATALYST Sc.1, Sc.2 and Sc3. This report provides preliminary results on real and simulated experiments covering the first scenario. The second scenario is covered mainly through computer simulated experiment (a physical pilot is not feasible) using real measurements and desk study.
The third scenario, the Workload Federated Data Centres, is addressed in collaboration with QRN DC. Focusing on the first scenario, a physical test was performed, based on a full DC switch-off from the local power grid, going on island operation. Moreover, this report provides results on a desk study done comparing static and dynamic UPS systems. Regarding the Sc.2, three test cases have been defined in D7.3: SBP_DC_TC_1 is simulated and focuses on the heat subtraction from the DC data rooms for heating the office area of the facility, a DC in-house system; SBP_DC_TC_2 is a desk study and investigation results are provided in this report about the possibility to use the waste heat from the flywheel for preheating the diesel
engine; SBP_DC_TC_4 is simulated and results of the performed simulations on the DC free cooling system are described in this report along with limitations on system applications, as well as economic boundary conditions on the system. Regarding the third CATALYST scenario, this report focuses on the setting up of IT Load migration test and describes the main steps of the IT Load migration procedure; trial on IT Load migration is ongoing and results will be provided in D7.5 report. The latter will include also results on trials related to Sc.7 Workload Federated DCs Providing Both Electrical Energy Flexibility and Thermal Energy which will be addressed by SBP as well.
It is important to underline that, differently from what it was stated in D7.3, Sc.3 Workload Federated Data Centres, is covered by PSNC, SBP and QRN DCs. Real experiments involve the federation between SBP DC and QRN DC and between PSNC DC and QRN DC. Regarding the deployment of DCMC (Data Center Migration Controller) Client on QRN server, that is a precondition for performing the IT load migration, this document shows results on the validation of CATALYST software on QRN side. The deployment of CATALYST software on PSNC and SBP is under finalisation.
Finally, outcome of trials performed in the Distributed QRN DC are provided in this report. This pilot covers Sc.1 and Sc.3. Indeed, tests are executed in real time with the main aim to demonstrate the DC capability of providing demand response services. Moreover, as anticipated, QRN DC will test the IT Load Migration through the federation with PSNC and SBP DCs respectively. Relevant results will be provided in D7.5 report. Moreover, QRN is planning to cover Sc.6 Workload Federated DCs Providing Thermal Energy Flexibility.
